6/08/10 Iain Turner Moves on

Barrettine's Northern-based Technical Sales Manager Iain Turner will be leaving them to join local pest control company Alpha Pest Control as their new Technical Support Manager.

Iain, who has known Alpha's owner Mike Flynn for many years is looking forward to the new challenge.  "Mike has some interesting ideas on how to take his business forward and I'm very pleased to have the opportunity to become involved", he notes.

His main regret however is leaving the Barrettine team, who he describes as a "great bunch of people, with the right approach to supporting their customers".  Unfortunately for Iain, changes in his personal circumstances mean that he is increasingly unable to continue to do the long-distance travelling with frequent overnight stops that his job with them entails.  "We will continue to use Barrettine as our 'preferred supplier' and I'm confident that we will be working closely together in the future – and it will be nice to be home in time for tea, well most nights anyway!" notes Turner

Chris Parmiter, Barrettine's Divisional Director, was quick in his praise for Iain and in wishing him well for his new venture. "Barrettine has long prided itself in the technical expertise and support that we give to both our customers and the wider Industry and Iain's contribution over the past 5 years cannot be understated on both counts".

I'm sure all that have known or been helped by Iain in the past will like to wish him good luck with this new chapter in his pest control career. Any pest controllers who used Iain as their point of contact are asked to contact David Haskins or Chris Parmiter for any technical or product advice in the short term.

25/05/10 - Frensham Day- best yet!

A packed Frensham Ponds Hotel in Surrey enjoyed a varied range of speakers as Barrettine once again joined forces with the NPTA for the South East Training Day. Amongst the topics covered, the spread of the harelquin ladybirds caught the attention of many as did the new implication of new legislation on lone workers, delivered by Oliver Madge of the PMF group. Andy Adams of Bayer delivered the most up to date information possible on the current situation surrounding anticoagulants whilst Barrettine's Iain Turner and Pest Controller Tony Baker covered the recent court case surrounding treatment of Feral Bees. The day was completed with workshops demonstrating drain control equipment from the Camscan range of cameras to the new vermend rat blocker.

Our thanks as ever to the speakers and of course sponsors including Paul Butt, Bayer, Agrisense, Bell, Rentokil Products and Network.

Due to the populairty of the day and the information in the talks, for the first time ever, we employed a camera crew to film all the presentations. We intend to make this available as a DVD in the coming weeks. Certain elements will also be available free and links will be posted on this site as soon as we get them. In the meantime a brief overview can be seen here

10/05/10 - Oa2ki

A query over the status of Oa2ki liquid for use on brown tail moth and other amenity uses has been raised. Oa2ki's use in public health remains unaffected. Anyone who has purchased the product specifically for Brown tail moth should contact the Sales Office on 0119 967 2222.

23/11/09 - Happy Birthday to ....... us!

Barrettine are delighted to announce that 2009 is their 130th year as an independent company.

JV Barrett & Co Ltd (Barrettine Group) was originally founded by Mr JV Barrett in 1879 and traded out of River Street near the old docks area of Bristol.

The company then traded a range of products including whale oil, mineral oils, pitch, tar, gum turpentine, linseed oils and pearl glue which were traded to merchants, as well as to the many ships and shipping lines that visited Bristol Docks.

In 1973, brothers Peter and Colin Bailey bought the company to allow the name and business to continue in private hands and still remains one of the longest surviving companies in the South West.

Today, JV Barrett & Co is still owned and managed by the family, with Colin's son Steven Bailey as the group managing director and employing around 70 staff.

Although the products such as Whale Oil have long been dropped from the products list, in addition to the Pest Control Division, Barrettine has 3 other Division including chemical blending and distribution, manufacturing of wood preservers and DIY products and a contract packing business.

As well as pest control companies and local authorities, the extensive customer base for the other Divisions include major national retailers, manufacturers and a growing export market.

Steve Bailey said: "While all of the Divisions trade separately, the ethos is the same across the group focusing on Customer service and quality of products and services at a competitive cost to our Customers.

Our ongoing success is not just down to our products and services but also very much due to the people that work for Barrettine. In all Divisions we have focused, dedicated and very professional personnel that take great pride in their own performance as well as the Company's.

On behalf of everyone involved in the business, we are all very proud to be custodians of one of the oldest independent Companies in our region.

Here's to the next 130 years!

04/09/09 - Brand new passive bed bug monitor now in stock

At last, an easy, efficient and cost effective way to monitor for bed bugs. The bed bug monitor is a passive device used to help monitor for the presence of bed bugs in hotels, hostels, institutions, domestic premisis and other places where activty is suspected.

The monitor relies on the fact that bed bugs harbour in cracks and crevices, usually close to their host and excrete excess liquid from their gut before entering a narrow harbourage. The layers of corrugated cardboard in the monitor mimic the usual favoured harbourages and the light colouration of the trap will show up the excreted gut contents as red or brown smears and spots. Complete with inspection table on the back for ease of recording

23/06/09 - Statement on letter circulated about Network

We have been approached by a number of customers recently after a letter, allegedly from another UK Distributor was sent around about Network.

The content of the letter seems to have caused some customers to be miss-led into the current status of Network.

A letter is going out from Brian Lister (Business Manager) which not only expresses his disappointment at the tactics used but also puts right any inaccuracies

As a proud distributor of Network, We too are disappointed and surprised by such tactics and wanted to reconfirm that Barrettine are able to offer the same excellent service on bird materials that we've always done. Backed by Networks  expertise and our own in-house team of Dave Haskins and Iain Turner, the supply of bird materials from Barrettine should be better than ever!

29/03/09 - Launch of Rat CP

Barrettine are pleased to announce the release of a new 'professional-only' rat bait that, as a multi-feed bait, is as potent as 'single-feed' products such as brodifacoum, but wita significantly reduced risk of secondary poisoning.

The product has a proven record in many countries worldwide and is being launched in the UK as ROMAX RAT CP.  Based on the special 'soft block' formulation, never seen in the UK before, this bait has proved to be particularly attractive to rats.  Indeed tests have shown it to be preferred to cereal-based baits.  As a block, however, it is 'non-spill' and can be secured in place.
The active ingredient is coumatetralyl at a level of 0.0375% w/w which, when formulated in such a palatable formulation, has out-performed many existing products in extensive field trials.  It has proved to be effective against both the 'good feeders' and the more difficult-to-control 'hesitant feeders' in the rat population, leading to excellent levels of control.

It has long been recognised that products based on this active pose a much lower risk of secondary poisoning, especially to predatory birds. Anyone with concerns about baiting where there are known populations of Barn Owls, Red Kites and other birds of prey can use this bait in the knowledge that they are most unlikely to cause any problems, if used correctly.

The active has been proven to control some strains of Rats resistant to other first generation anticoagulants and in most situations is as effective as some of the early 2nd generation actives, such as bromadiolone but with the benefit of being less persistent in the environment.

A new and 'intellegent' way to do Rat control. For more information on our unique product, please call 0117 967 2222

18/12/08 Statement on the European REACH regulations

As the regulations are complex it remains impossible to predict exactly the impact on the industry as a whole.  However, we do know that these new requirements will have a major impact on all manufacturers, importers, distributors and downstream users in the European Union, and will require a joint collaboration between all supply chain participants.

We are also aware of the general concerns within the Chemical industry, regarding the potential for some chemical substances to be withdrawn from the European market as a consequence of REACH, either due to regulatory action or commercial considerations, and the impact this may have for downstream users of these substances.

We at the Barrettine Group are committed to meeting our legal obligations under REACH, whether it be as a manufacturer, importer, distributor or downstream user and we have already begun our internal preparations to ensure compliance is met in a timely manner.

We are taking steps to ensure that all the chemicals we use, supply or which are used in the manufacture of items we produce, will be Registered. As the preparation for Registration proceeds we will need to consider your uses so that these can be included in those applications supported by the manufacturers of the various substances involved.

Fortunately, One aspect of the Biocides Directive which does have a benefit is that Europe have decided that due to the extremely high-level of data and information required under the BPD, those pesticides registered under the legislation are exempt from the REACH regs as they are deemed to have been sufficiently assessed- see below:

active biocidal substances for biocidal uses are exempt from registration and authorisation under REACH (see REACH Regulation Chapter 2, Substances regarded as being registered, Article 15, Substances in plant protection and biocidal products, pt. 2; and Title VII, Authorisation, Chapter 1, Authorisation Requirement, Article 56 (4) b), General provisions, exemptions)

If you have any additional questions about the REACH regulations, please call the Barrettine Technical Department

07/11/08 War on problem mice

With ever increasing concerns about palatability and behaioural resitance amongst mice populations, Romax have been working on a formualtion to offer the ultimate in efficacy for mice control. Based on an artificial peanut butter formulation, our new Difenacoum bait comes in handy, pre-dosed sachets. Anyone working in food environments, the formualtion also has the added benefit of having an 'synthetic' peanut flavourings, so unlike other products, it can be used in nut-free environments
The added benefit is that the product also contains a preservative which reduces the subsequent odours associated with the dead rodents. For more information, or to place an order, please call the sales office.

05/03/08 Information on Pest Control Operations and Bats

There has been a recent (2007) amendment to "The Conservation Regulations (Habitat Regulations) 1994" which removes the defence that any 'disturbance' of a bat roost was "an incidental result of an otherwise lawful operation". This has some significance for pest control operations in places such as roof spaces.  You must be very careful to ensure that no bats are present before treatment commences, otherwise you may be guilty of the offence of "recklessly" killing or injuring a bat. This does not mean that no pest control operations can be carried out if you suspect that bats may be present.  You should still be able to carry out a treatment of a wasp nest, provided a suitable pesticide is introduced carefully through the entrance hole and is contained in the nest.  You may be still able to carry out a rodent treatment in a loft space, depending on the time of year, where the bats are and what product you use.

However, you are likely to run into problems with timber treatments and especially, treatments for cluster flies.

Do your technicians routinely check for bats in all treatments of lofts?  Have they been trained to do this?  Is this recorded each time on a site 'Risk Assessment'? Do they know what to do if they suspect bats have used the loft space in the past and may be still so doing?

You may already be on top of the situation, but  not everyone is.  It is all very well to stop staff working inside loft spaces, as some employers do, but if they are still treating wasps nests from the outside, how would they know if bats are present or not?

If there is any way in which we can help you with this issue –  please do not hesitate to contact Iain Turner on 07730 832379 and we will try to point you in the right directions

2/1/08 Price Freeze

Happy New Year to all of our customers!- As a belated Christmas gift, Barrettine have absorbed the manufacturers price increases for the first 2 weeks of the New Year, freezing our prices at 2007 levels until 18th January. After this date, we will be forced to pass on the increases. On another 'positive', the rises this year have not been as steep as widely anticipated ( despite fuel, cost of the Biocides Directive plus general inflation)- most of the increases fall within the 2-4% range. With the massive increases in wheat costs (increasing by nearly 100% in 12 months), unsurprisingly the biggest increases have been seen in the area of rodent baits with the increases ranging up to 7.5%. To take advantage of these lower prices or any of our other offers, please contact the Sales Office on 0117 967 2222

PLEASE NOTE, BARRETTINE IS A TRADE-ONLY SUPPLIER AND THEREFORE UNFORTUNATELY WE ONLY SUPPLY TO THE PROFESSIONAL PEST CONTROL MARKET

26/08/06 Welcome to our new website.

Please feel free to browse the site at your leisure. The site is still under construction in the background and will continue to improve over a period of time. We would welcome any comments (good or bad) on the site and any ideas on how we might improve it further.
